We are currently seeking volunteers for Peer Support Counsellor positions, to join the text/phone counselling department.

Candidate Responsibilities:

  • Attend text messages and phone lines via Naseeha’s online platform regulated by ‘RingCentral’ between the scheduled shift hours and to record calls on ICarol as well as to mitigate conflictual situations on the RingCentral platform
  • Provide peer support to service users by:
    • Operate under the direction of Team Lead
    • Engage clients in active listening and validating feelings/emotions
    • Ability to express empathy regarding challenges of the situation (conditional on counsellors comfort level and expertise)
    • Ability to de-escalate anxiety or panic attack, and provide coping strategies 
    • Screen for symptoms of suicidal and homicidal ideation
    • Understanding of 911 protocol 
    • Knowledge of coaching clients to produce safety plan
    • Ability to make referrals to community resources and professionals as required 
  • Administrative duties as required (i.e. case notes, update team lead, attending trainings, organizational meetings)
  • Other responsibilities as assigned 

Candidate Requirements:

  1. A degree or diploma in a mental health related field
  2. Excellent knowledge of telephone counselling, crisis intervention principles and techniques
  3. Knowledge of service delivery modalities including brief solution focused approach
  4. Fluent in English (verbal and written). Additional languages are an asset.
  5. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and problem solving strategies to work with a diverse population
  6. Knowledge of the issues facing vulnerable children, youth and families
  7. Flexibility and willingness to put extra hours into the organization

Term of Engagement

  • Minimum two 4-hour shifts per month
  • 1 year minimum (3 month probation), with annual renewal
