Getting married or even maintaining a relationship within husband and wife is becoming more pressured due to various circumstances. In-laws, kids, financial situations or even cultural barriers can get in the way. Getting the right people involved in arbitration can also be tricky at times, and we forget the essence of why we got into this relationship to start with. Islam emphasizes the beauty of this relationship as completing half of your deen.
THE ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE
In the Qur’an, the marriage relationship is described as one with “tranquility,” “love” and “mercy.” Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) kept reminding us in his traditions on how gentle and kind we need to treat our wives and how obedient we need to be with our husbands. It is a highly recommended sunnah to please each other sexually and to be the garments of each other. When things don’t work out, there are many alternatives to find the means to make things work, however, divorce is permissible and should be taken seriously and be the last alternative if no other solution prevails.
